Indeed, it’s so popular in the West that the phrase “grabbing coffee” has taken on a more general meaning beyond the literal grabbing of coffee, to refer to a quick hang-out or light meal. Bubble tea, long popular in many East Asian countries, has made its way to the West, starting in the West Coast of the US. This popular drink, also known as “boba” or “pearl milk tea,” is a delicious milk-tea-based drink originating in Taiwan in the 1980s. Being that they are both caffeinated beverages that help many across the world start their day, it’s only natural that some have sought to compare them. <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">PopularityNaturally, comparing the two might be akin to comparing apples and oranges, as they have significantly different starting points. Nevertheless, it’s interesting to see the various comparisons that have been made in popular culture as bubble tea continues to permeate various parts of Western society. By and large, in spite of its <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">burgeoning [2] popularity, bubble tea remains an underdog when compared to coffee. Coffee constitutes a cornerstone of American life and culture-- Starbucks is ubiquitous: in the US alone, there were more than 13,000 stores as of late 2018.  However, bubble tea aficionados say that it offers more diversity and a caffeine alternative to coffee. Naturally, there is still a huge uphill climb for any bubble tea chain to reach the same scale as Starbucks, but many are optimistic since boba continues to defy expectations and increase in popularity.  <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">HealthThe health benefits of bubble tea are often disputed. While tapioca is objectively not a “health food,” some say that bubble tea offers a fairly healthy alternative to coffee. Tea, having antioxidants, provides a natural caffeine boost. Others argue that the high-calorie and high-fat content of a given bubble tea drink outweighs any <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">antioxidant [3] benefits. In fairness, a 16-ounce cup of bubble tea might contain as much as 440 calories, with 200 coming from fat. By comparison, a 16-ounce cup of coffee with milk and sugar only total about 30 calories. <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Market ComparisonIn 2016, the bubble tea market was valued at $415 million and is expected to reach $4 billion by 2027. This, however, still shys in comparison to the coffee market, which is valued at around $45 billion in the US alone.  Yet, as bubble tea continues to expand in the west and globally, so too does the market for it. Will the burgeoning bubble tea come to compete with its elder, caffeinated counterpart? Will the term “grabbing bubble tea” become as ubiquitous as “grabbing coffee?” Only time will tell.
