IntroductionFrom a global standpoint, there’s really no competition: Android accounts for about 73 percent of the mobile operating system global market share, with iOS (iPhone) accounting for only 27 percent. In the US, however, the iPhone edges ahead, constituting about 60 percent of the share, with Android holding a mere 40.  The RationaleThe reasons behind this distinction are numerous, but what’s fascinating is that the competition between the two powers has gradually made its way into common discourse and culture in the States. The question of “iPhone or Android?” is one that you might find yourself running into should you find yourself in the US for an extended time.Indeed, the decision to prefer one platform over the other carries with it some stereotypes, be they accurate or not. iPhone users can sometimes be perceived as more creative and artsy. Android users are seen as more pragmatic, perhaps because the decision to use an Android device sometimes indicates choosing function over form.  The FlagshipsIn late 2020, Apple released the iPhone 12, which, as of the time of writing, is the latest iPhone in the series. Likewise, Apple’s largest US Android competitor, Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S21, had been out for several months prior. While the entry-level devices of both manufacturers are similarly priced (in the range of $800 USD), the ultimate decision on which you prefer genuinely comes down to one of preference. The Galaxy S21 has a couple of features of note that cannot be replicated on its competitor: the most notable one being its camera zoom. Likewise, the iPhone 12 has iOS specific features (like iMessage) that aren’t available on Android. Regardless of which device you ultimately settle on, it’s useful to remember the way these devices are perceived in popular culture. Like it or not, you might find yourself being judged (or judged by others) based wholly on your most preferred device.
