Uber Eats? As you might know, food delivery has not always been considered an essential service for restaurants--  rather, it served as a point of differentiation. Food delivery was popular in parts of Asia, though in North America, only pizzerias were commonly accepted as restaurants that would deliver. Most importantly, there was no central company that specialized in providing food delivery services.Originally, the growth of food delivery start-ups were spawned by several online startups. In the US, those were primarily Postmates, GrubHub, and DoorDash. In the UK, the service is Deliveroo. In China, Eli.me (an Alibaba backed startup) and Maituan (a Tencent backed startup) are most popular. Finally, in South Korea, Baedal Minjok and Yogiyo dominate the food delivery market.When DoorDash, established in 2013 by Stanford students, received its Series B funding in 2015, the company was viewed along the ranks of Uber and AirBnB. DoorDash has also been valued by Chinese firms at $3B. In May of 2019, DoorDash announced its $600 million Series G financing, which valued it at $12.6B. In the United States, the relatively low average population density and restaurants’ lack of either the physical capital or the manpower to accomplish deliveries made the country a “wasteland” when it came to food delivery. Finally, they submit a review of the experience after consumption. </li><li dir="ltr" style="list-style-type: disc; 12pt; font-family: Times New Roman; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre;" aria-level="1"><span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">DoorDash’s profit model: DoorDash charges the user $5-10 up front and receives a 20% commission as ad revenue from each restaurant displayed on its platform. </li></ul><span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Ongoing changes: a food delivery recession?As recently as 2016, there has been increased doubts surrounding the profitability of food delivery startups due to a rise in bankruptcies. Take American food manufacturer and delivery startup SpoonRocket, for example, who filed for bankruptcy in March of 2016. Likewise, Indian startups PepperTap and TinyOwl went out of business in April of that same year. The media, noting that food delivery startups have failed to meet original expectations, have cited three major reasons for their failure: fierce competition, a narrow profit margin, and operational difficulties. The market is overcrowded, and as a result, startups face real threats from Uber and Amazon, who have already entered the market in various capacities. Likewise, although profit margins have shifted, the sky high costs of labor is<span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"> stymying [2]  growth and narrowing profit margins. Finally, operational difficulties are a major hurdle; since the quality of food and timing of deliveries is critical, it becomes increasingly difficult for companies to guarantee quality deliveries of food. On the other hand, Korean food delivery companies are in a better position in the industry compared to US startups. Baedal Minjok and Yogiyo, the premier services mediate deliveries, rather than accomplishing the deliveries themselves. The service is convenient and offers many <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">perks <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">[3] to users. Yet, looking ahead, it is hard to imagine how service might grow and improve. Although Baedal Minjok and Yogiyo are the most popular services in Korea right now, more and more companies are entering the market, making competition increasingly fierce.<span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">COVID-19: a pandemic shifts the scalesFollowing the COVID-19 pandemic, however, food delivery services have once again entered the forefront of customers’ minds. As a byproduct of lockdown rules across the US, food delivery apps have seen an increase of some three billion dollars between Q2 and Q3 of 2019. These increases in demand have left some local restaurants with limited options; some were forced to sign up for the app in order to have a chance at survival in what has become the “new normal.”Likewise, there is still much to see with regards to how the food delivery services change following the end of the pandemic. As lockdowns have lifted, there is still significant demand for food delivery services, but when restaurants fully open once again, it’s uncertain whether demand for these food delivery services will persist. As users, or spectators of our local food delivery services, we have unique insights on our personal motivations.
