In 2021, Apple was evaluated as having lost its touch when it comes to product innovation. This comes a decade after the death of Steve Jobs, a legend of innovation in the tech industry. Apple, at that time, was a company that always had us guessing at what their next product would be.  Apple’s focus on simple design, innovation, and usability was unmatched in the market. Despite its price, and in spite of having a limited customer pool relative to the likes of Microsoft, Samsung, Nokia, or Motorola, it was a brand that always had customers lining up at its door the night before a product launch. As a result, Apple has long been a company that’s benchmarked by others. However, following recent product launches, there seems to be a prevailing opinion [1] that it no longer has the “essence of innovation” it once did.  The iPhone, App Store, and new markets Steve Jobs was the CEO that drove Apple's innovation in the 2000s. Take the iPhone, for example, which meaningfully launched the smartphone market. With the creation of this phone, Steve Jobs's Apple designed the App Store, a world of unlimited services and software made specifically for it. This store served to connect app developers all over the world — a global ecosystem where distributing software to customers was simple and easy.  Even after the record-setting iPhone, Apple introduced the iPad, rocking the tablet market, which, until then, was virtually non-existent. Apple was able to hop in the ambiguous market area between computers and smartphones, establishing a segment with the iPad’s functional innovation, improved portability, and a simple yet easy-to-use product design.  Steve Jobs's presentations: Apple's signature promotional activity Many have undoubtedly seen videos of Jobs giving presentations in jeans and a black t-shirt. In late January or early February of each year, Jobs would give presentations bringing Apple’s products to the focus of the media. People eagerly awaited his keynote speech, and media articles and rumors only heightened the excitement surrounding new product releases.  Jobs’s presentational skills were nothing to laugh at [2], but part of what engaged people most was Apple’s pure innovation. Products improved lives, and in combination with their presentation, people eagerly paid attention.  Jobs’s philosophy: simplicity, simplicity … simplicity! In the days of Steve Jobs, iPhones always had the same dimensions. Jobs only focused on developing and improving functions within the iPhone and didn’t concern himself with product size diversification [3]. As a result, app developers for the iPhone were also able to focus on improving functions given the iPhone standard.   In the 2000s, iPhones, iPads, iMacs, and MacBooks only offered one or two colors. Jobs believed that having users concern themselves with color options was unnecessary. Accessories, like keyboards and earphones, also focused on simple design and usability, with few updates. The uniformness of the iPhone’s size, color, and beyond seem to be a result of Jobs’s style. Even in dress, he had one preferred style of fashion: a black turtleneck and jeans. Simplicity left room for new and innovative experiences.  Apple of the 2020s: aesthetic above essence?  In the past half-decade, fans have raised concerns that Apple is departing from the philosophy established by Steve Jobs. Indeed, one of the notable distinctions of the iMac in 2021 is its “diversified colors.” And although Apple introduced their own silicon chip, improving cost-efficiency, customers didn’t find this innovation nearly as surprising.  Beyond colors, it seems that size changes are popping up as well. The iPhone 12 was most recently released in three different sizes. Its distinction from the iPhone 11 was not so much in function, but more in features. The latest update brought more cameras, more pixels, and more advanced video recording, but few meaningful functional upgrades with the iPhone itself.  Recently, shifts in Apple’s marketing have also led some experts to question the company’s intentions. Its most recent ads focus on an appeal to the senses, with colors, music, and blinking text, rather than the presentation of functions.  Market Evaluation In spite of the concerns mentioned above, under current CEO Tim Cook, Apple continues to grow with respect to its sales, revenue, and corporate value. In 2021, the share of US iOS users began to exceed that of Android’s, and Apple’s wearables (AirPods and Apple Watch) grew 50% relative to the previous year, exceeding the iPad and accounting for 10% of their total sales. Apple’s yield is now over 40%, and as of June 2021, its market capitalization is at 2,400 trillion won. It holds significant ground relative to other promising global tech companies, like Amazon, Google, and Microsoft. To some end, there is irony in criticizing Apple's loss of innovation as the company grows faster and faster in corporate value. After all, the degrees of changes Apple has undertaken with Cook’s guidance have had both its critics and advocates. How do you foresee Apple changing in the next half-decade?

2021년, 애플은 제품 혁신에 대한 감각을 잃었다는 평가를 받고 있습니다. 이는 전자산업계의 혁신을 주도하던 아이콘 스티브 잡스가 타계한지 10여년이 지나면서 나오는 평가입니다. 당시의 애플은 다음 제품으로 뭘 만들지를 항상 궁금하게 만드는 회사였습니다. 애플의 심플한 디자인, 혁신, 뛰어난 사용성에 대한 집중력은 타사가 따라올 수 없는 수준이었습니다. 가격이 비싸고, 마이크로소프트의 윈도우 유저나 삼성, 노키아, 모토롤라 등의 브랜드에 비해서는 훨씬 좁은 고객층 중심으로만 로열티가 형성되어 있긴 했지만, 신제품이 나올 때마다 그 제품을 사려고 밤을 세워 줄을 서는 풍경을 만들어 냈습니다. 결과적으로, 애플은 여러 전자 회사들이 유심히 벤치마킹을 하던 회사였습니다. 하지만 최근에 론칭된 여러 제품들에서는 과거에 보여주었던 ‘혁신의 본질’을 찾아보기 힘들다는 평이 우세합니다.  아이폰, 앱스토어, 새로 개척한 시장 스티브 잡스는 2000년대 애플의 제품 혁신을 주도한 CEO였습니다. 우선 스마트폰 시장을 창조한 아이폰을 예를 들어보겠습니다. 이 폰을 만들어냄으로써, 스티브 잡스의 애플은 앱스토어를 설계했고, 아이폰을 중심으로 한 무한한 서비스와 이 폰만을 위해 설계된 소프트웨어 세상을 창조했습니다. 이 스토어는 전 세계 고객을 대상으로 소프트웨어를 배포하는 심플하고 쉬운 글로벌 생태계를 구현해 냄으로써, 전세계 앱개발자들을 연결 시켰습니다.  기록에 남을만한 아이폰을 창조한 후에도, 애플은 그때까지 ‘존재하지 않는 제품군’으로 여겨졌던 태블릿 시장에 아이패드를 선보이며 새로운 시장을 만들어 냈습니다. 아이패드는 기능적 혁신과 휴대성 개선, 심플하면서도 사용감이 좋은 제품으로 컴퓨터와 모바일폰 중간의 애매한 시장을 제대로 된 세그먼트로 키워낸 것입니다.  스티브 잡스의 프레젠테이션, 애플의 시그니처 마케팅 활동 커다란 스크린을 배경으로 청바지에 검은 티셔츠를 입은 스티브 잡스가 프리젠테이션을 하는 영상을 보신 분이 많으실 겁니다. 매년 1월 말 또는 2월초경, 스티브 잡스는 애플의 제품이 전세계 미디어의 집중 조명을 받을 수 있는 프리젠테이션을 선사했습니다. 많은 사람들이 스티브 잡스의 키노트 스피치를 기다리며 며칠, 몇주를 두고 올해는 어떤 제품이 나올지에 대한 기사를 찾아보며 기대감을 키우고는 했습니다. 사람들을 이렇게 목마르게 기다리게 하는 것은, 스티브 잡스의 발표 스킬이 워낙 좋기도 했지만, 애플의 순수한 혁신성 때문이기도 했습니다. 애플의 제품은 사람들의 삶을 개선시켰고, 이 혁신성이 그의 발표와 어울어졌을 때 사람들은 기쁘게 그의 발표에 귀를 기울였습니다.  잡스의 철학: 단순함의 추구  스티브 잡스 시절, 아이폰은 크기와 규격은 항시 일정했습니다. 그는 아이폰 내 소비자 경험 혁신을 위한 기능 개발, 개선에만 초점을 뒀을 뿐, 제품 크기 다변화 등에 대해서는 신경쓰지 않았다고 합니다. 이에, 아이폰 내 앱을 공급했던 앱 개발사들 역시, 일정한 규격의 아이폰에 맞춰 앱 기능 개선에만 집중할 수 있었습니다.  또 2000년대의 애플 아이폰, 아이패드, 아이맥, 맥북 등은 1~2개 제한적 컬러 옵션만을 제공하였습니다. 스티브 잡스는 유저가 ‘어떤 색 제품을 구매할까?’ 고민하는 것 자체가 불필요한 고민이라 생각했다고 합니다. 키보드, 이어폰 등 악세서리 역시 심플한 디자인 및 개선된 사용성에 초점을 맞춰졌고, 업데이트도 많지 않았습니다.  2020년대의 애플: 본질 보다는 겉모습의 변화? 최근 많은 애플 팬들은 애플이 스티브 잡스 시절과는 다른 방향으로 업데이트 되고 있다는 우려의 목소리를 높이고 있습니다. 2021년 신형 아이맥의 특징 중 하나는 ‘다양해진 컬러’였습니다. 물론, 애플에서 직접 개발한 칩이 처음 탑재되었으며 가성비가 상대적으로 좋아졌다는 장점이 있긴 하나, 소비자들을 놀라게 할 정도의 혁신은 아니었습니다.  또 다양한 컬러 외 크기에 대한 변화도 잦습니다. 최근 출시된 아이폰12는 3가지 다른 사이즈의 제품으로 출시되었습니다. 이 폰이 아이폰11 대비 다른 점은 기능적인 개선이 아닌 일부 스팩 변경 뿐이었습니다. 최근 아이폰 업데이트 시 가장 주목받은 것은, 아이폰 새로운 기능 개발 등이 아닌, 내장 카메라의 개수, 화소 및 영상 촬영 기능 등의 개선이었고, 아이폰 자체의 업그레이드는 아니었었습니다.  기업가치 이런 우려들에도 불구하고 현재 CEO 팀 쿡 휘하에서 애플은 매출, 수익, 기업가치 등 여러 측면에서 빠른 성장을 지속하고 있습니다.  최근 미국 내 iOS 점유율은 안드로이드를 상회하기 시작하였으며, 애플의 웨어러블 기기사업(에어팟, 애플 워치 등)이 50% 가까운 성장률을 보이며 애플 전체 매출의 10%를 넘어섰습니다. 애플의 수익률은 40% 이상을 기록하고 있고, 시가총액은 2021년 6월 기준 2,400조원으로, 유망한 글로벌 Tech 회사 중에서도 Amazon, Google, MS 등과 큰 격차를 유지하며 최고의 자리를 차지하고 있습니다. 어떤 면에서, 애플에 대한 부정적 평가가 더 빠른 가치 성장과 동반되는 것은 역설적이기도 합니다. 결국, 쿡의 지침에 따라 변한 애플을 비판하는 목소리가 있었다면 이를 지지하는 이들도 있었다는 것입니다. 5년 후의 애플은 어떤 모습일 것이라고 생각하시나요?
