‘제로 웨이스트’를 알고 있나요? ‘제로 웨이스트’란 모든 제품들이 어떻게든 재사용될 수 있도록, 그 상품 재질이 만들어지고 사용되고 버려지는 과정을 전면적으로 재설계함으로써 쓰레기 발생을 방지하는 사회운동을 의미합니다. 쓰레기를 줄이기 위해 전세계적으로 어떤 노력을 하는지 알아봅시다.

In July 2020, a new type of grocery store made its debut in Korea. Wasteupso isn’t like most stores. There’s no plastic packaging in sight. Most goods, like rice or pasta, are sold from bulk bins, and you must bring your own bag and containers for your items. They also sell a range of household products made of wood, ceramic, and metal.  These rules make Wasteupso the first grocery store in Korea to be explicitly Zero Waste—a movement focused on waste prevention that aims to redesign resource life cycles so that all products are reused in some way. For people concerned about the environment, the Zero Waste movement is a way of exercising personal agency [1] to live more sustainably. The goal is for no personal trash to be sent to landfills, incinerators, or the ocean. This means avoiding single-use plastics, such as straws, disposable shopping bags, bubble wrap from packages, and water bottles. It also involves reducing fossil fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions through lifestyle changes, such as walking instead of driving or wearing a sweater instead of turning up the heating in winter.  Waste is a grave problem around the world. The average European or American consumes around 100kg of plastic a year, mostly from packaging. Since recycled plastic is low quality and more expensive than simply making plastic from scratch [2], most plastics which are in theory recyclable end up buried or in the ocean.  The situation with food waste is no better. Approximately one third of all food produced for human consumption is wasted each year, a whopping 1.3 billion tons. In the face of these shocking statistics, it’s worthwhile for everyone to find some ways to reduce their waste. Shopping at a zero-waste grocery store is one increasingly trendy way of reducing waste and is now an option in places as diverse as Bali and Brooklyn. But there are some even simpler — not to mention cheaper — lifestyle changes that are just as effective. Taking reusable bags to the grocery store, cooking at home, composting [4], or bringing your lunch to work instead of ordering are all ways of reducing waste. Some people go to such lengths as making their own cleaning products or refusing to buy new clothes or furniture, preferring to rely on secondhand [3] goods as a way of reducing waste. Starting a vegetable or herb garden is another way of reducing waste from packaging while saving money in the long run.  Some governments around the world are also trying to reduce their waste production. Since the 1920s, Germany’s “pfand” system has required shoppers to pay a small deposit ranging from eight to 25 cents when they buy bottles or cans. These can be returned to a machine available at most supermarkets and the deposit will be returned to the consumer. To combat food waste, France passed a law in 2016 banning large grocery stores from throwing away unsold food that could be donated to charities. Just this year, the Canadian government reclassified plastic as a toxin, the first step in banning single-use plastics altogether.  While Zero Waste principles seem simple, they are not so easy in practice. Consider your bathroom. How many of your every-day hygiene products come in plastic containers? Or think about when you go to the grocery store. How much of the food that you buy ends up in the trash? Asking these questions and becoming more aware of our consumption is the first step in reducing personal waste. You might be surprised at how simple it is to make positive changes that leave the environment — and your wallet — healthier.

2020년 7월, 한국에 새로운 형태의 슈퍼마켓이 문을 열었습니다. 웨이스트업소는 다른 슈퍼마켓들과는 조금 다릅니다. 여기서는 플라스틱 포장재를 전혀 찾아볼 수 없습니다. 쌀이나 파스타 등 대부분의 상품들이 큰 포대기에 담아 팔리고, 손님들은 물건을 담아갈 가방이나 용기를 직접 챙겨와야 합니다. 그리고 이곳에서는 나무, 도기, 철로 만들어진 다양한 생활용품들을 팔고 있습니다.  이러한 규칙들은 웨이스트업소를 한국 최초로 제로 웨이스트(Zero Waste)를 표방한 슈퍼마켓으로 만들었습니다. 제로 웨이스트란 모든 제품들이 어떻게든 재사용될 수 있도록 자원이 만들어지고 사용되고 버려지는 과정을 전면적으로 재설계함으로써, 쓰레기 발생을 방지하려는 사회운동을 의미합니다. 환경 보호에 관심이 많은 사람들은 이러한 제로 웨이스트 운동을 통하여 각자의 삶 속에서 친환경적인 생활습관을 실천하고 있습니다. 그 궁극적인 목표는 어떤 생활쓰레기도 쓰레기매립장이나 소각장, 또는 바다에 버려지지 않도록 하는 것입니다. 이는 곧 빨대, 일회용 쇼핑백, 택배나 유리병에 이용되는 뽁뽁이 등 한 번 밖에 사용할 수 없는 플라스틱 제품들의 사용을 피하는 것을 의미합니다. 또한, 이는 자동차를 이용하는 대신 걸어 다닌다거나, 겨울에 난방을 트는 대신 따뜻한 스웨터를 입는 등의 생활방식 변화를 통하여 화석연료 사용량과 온실가스 배출을 줄이는 것도 포함합니다.  쓰레기는 전세계적으로 매우 심각한 문제입니다. 유럽이나 미국에서는 1인당 매년 평균 100킬로그램의 플라스틱을 사용하는데, 그 발생 주범은 대부분 포장재라고 합니다. 재활용 플라스틱은 새 플라스틱보다 품질도 떨어지고 더 비싸기 때문에, 대부분의 플라스틱들은 이론적으로는 재활용이 가능함에도 불구하고 땅에 묻히거나 바다에 버려집니다. 이러한 상황은 음식물쓰레기라고 하더라도 크게 다르지 않습니다. 매년 인간을 위해 생산된 식료품의 대략1/3 정도가 무려 1.3톤에 이르는 음식물 쓰레기로 버려진다고 합니다.  이러한 충격적인 통계수치를 고려할 때, 우리 모두가 쓰레기를 줄이는 방안을 모색해 볼만한 가치가 있습니다. 제로 웨이스트 슈퍼마켓에서 쇼핑을 하는 것은 최근 들어 유행하고 있는 쓰레기 감소 방안으로서, 발리나 브루클린 등 다양한 지역에서대안으로 떠오르고 있습니다. 그러나 그만큼 효과적이면서도 더 싼 것은 말할 필요도 없고 더 간단한 방법으로도 생활습관을 바꿀 방법은 얼마든지 있습니다. 슈퍼마켓에 갈 때 재활용 가능한 가방을 챙겨가고, 집에서 직접 요리를 한다거나, 남은 음식물쓰레기로 퇴비를 만들거나, 일할 때 점심을 시켜먹는 대신 도시락을 직접 싸가는 방법들이 모두 쓰레기를 줄이기 위한 해결책이 될 수 있습니다. 어떤 사람들은 쓰레기를 줄이기 위하여, 직접 청소 도구를 만들거나 새 옷이나 새 가구보다 중고 제품을 선호하는 등의 방법까지 동원하기도 합니다. 집에서 야채나 허브를 직접 키우는 것도 장기적으로 봤을 때는 돈을 절약할 뿐만 아니라 포장재 사용을 줄임으로써 쓰레기를 줄이는 또 다른 대안입니다.  쓰레기 발생량을 줄이기 위해 정부 차원에서 노력을 하는 나라들도 있습니다. 독일은 1920년대 이후로 pfand 시스템이라는 것을 만들어, 사람들이 유리병이나 캔을 샀을 때 8-25센트 정도의 예치금을 내도록 합니다. 그리고 이 예치금은 대부분의 슈퍼마켓에 설치된 기계를 통해 소비자들에게 다시 환불됩니다. 프랑스는 2016년 음식물 쓰레기를 줄이기 위하여, 슈퍼마켓에서 팔리지 않는 식료품들은 자선단체에 기부될 수 있도록 이를 내다버리는 것을 금지하는 법을 제정하였습니다. 그리고 올해 캐나다 정부는 플라스틱을 독성물질로 재분류하면서, 한번만 사용 가능한 플라스틱의 사용을 전부 금지하는 첫 발걸음을 내딛었습니다.  제로 웨이스트 원칙이 겉으로는 단순해보여도, 일상 생활에 적용하는 것은 그리 쉬운 일이 아닙니다. 화장실을 예로 들어 봅시다. 얼마나 많은 위생용품들이 플라스틱 용기에 담겨있습니까? 아니면 슈퍼마켓의 경우를 생각해봅시다. 우리가 산 음식들 중 얼마나 많은 것들이 쓰레기통에 버려지나요? 자기 자신에게 이러한 질문들을 던지고 소비습관에 더 주의를 기울이는 것이 생활쓰레기를 줄이는 첫 디딤돌이 됩니다. 지구는 지키되 돈은 절약할 수 있는 긍정적인 변화들을 만들기 위해 우리가 해야 하는 일들이 얼마나 단순한지를 알게 된다면 아마 깜짝 놀랄 것입니다.
