Culture is an umbrella term that captures the fundamental ideas, beliefs, norms, and social behaviors of a group. Language is a part of culture and learning a new language, more often than not, comes with exploring new cultures. While complete immersion [1] can be one effective way to familiarize yourself with a culture, learning about it through friends, books, or conversation more slowly can also be a helpful way to expand one’s horizons. That said, consider the following advice for learning, teaching, and exploring new cultures.
Avoid stereotypes
Stereotypes [2] help us to make quick judgments about the world, but are not as helpful when it comes to learning new things about the world and ourselves. When it comes to exploring a culture that you may be unfamiliar with, try to start with no assumptions.
Focus on understanding
You may already be familiar with some differences between your culture and the one you’re exploring, but it can be helpful to consider why these differences exist as you make sense of a new world.
Explore culture through food
“The path to the stomach is the path to heaven,” says an old proverb [3]. Although food may have different roles in different cultures, it’s undeniable that food is a significant component of culture. Try eating new foods, cooking new foods, and exploring culture by way of food.
The journey to understanding and appreciating a new culture can be a long and (at times) arduous process, but armed with these tips, you’ll be well on your way to appreciating new ways to live in no time. Plus, your language skills will no doubt grow as a result, too.
