In 2019, California became the first US state to pass the CROWN Act, a law prohibiting race-based hair discrimination at work and in schools. The Act, which stands for Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair, was passed in response to a growing movement seeking greater protections for the natural hair of Black women. Now, a version of the CROWN Act is law in 19 states. To pass in all 50, Dove, a toiletries company most known for its hair-care products, is leading the charge.  Dove seeks to “make beauty a source of confidence, not anxiety,” which is why it created the CROWN Coalition to advance the CROWN Act at the state and federal levels. Black women have long faced discrimination for maintaining their natural hair, which often falls outside of the Eurocentric beauty standards that are deeply <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">entrenched [1] in the West. For example, a Black woman is 80% more likely to change her natural hair to conform to social norms of professional expectations, and Black women are 1.5x more likely to be sent home from work or school because of her hair. Additionally, half of Black children suffered some form of hair discrimination by the time they were five years old. Discrimination of any kind can have long-lasting impacts, especially if it’s experienced as a child.  The CROWN Coalition, which Dove established along with the National Urban League, Color of Change, and Western Center on Law & Poverty, pursues a more <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">equitable [2] and inclusive world that celebrates beauty in all forms, not just those within a set of standards that historically excludes people of color. Dove knows that the CROWN Act would have positive social, cultural, and economic effects, and passing it would create a more respectful world that improves self-esteem, not harm it. It is also an example of corporate social responsibility. Increasingly, companies are investing more in their environmental, social, and governance (ESG) policies to not only better the world around them, but also grow as a company. Responsible and genuine ESG initiatives, like the CROWN Coalition, benefit everyone involved, not just the <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">bottom line [3].
