Buckle up and let’s travel in our time machine all the way back to the dawn of mankind, when human beings officially joined the animal kingdom. Scientists call this time “Prehistory,” meaning a time before humans could document their lives. Woolly mammoths, giant sloths, and other beasts roam the earth as humans hunt and live in caves. Life is harsh here, nearly 73,000 years before the invention of the internet. However, even in the harshest times, people <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">persevere [1]. Our first destination in this ancient world is South Africa, on the land that will eventually become farms and villages. In a dark cave, lit by the flickering light of a fire, our prehistoric hosts feed us roasted wild meat and grains. We watch the women pound away at hides to make clothing, while the children crush berries and make paint. After we are done feasting together, we brush the walls and draw the animals we saw outside. Cave drawings like this are the oldest art known to humanity! Thousands of kilometers away from our South African party is the Bangudae Petroglyphs, now known as one of the <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">national treasures [2] of Korea. The site consists of a new innovation in cave art, carving. By using stones and other tools, ancient Koreans were able to make three-dimensional portraits of land and sea animals. At Bangudae, you can see birds, turtles, whales, deer, and even seals. Archaeologists believe that this ancient site was originally a place for people to wait while storms and other dangers passed by. Ancient people began to decorate the walls of the cave to make themselves feel more comfortable, and to tell stories and other important information to their children and neighbors.  Our final destination in today’s prehistoric world tour is Blackwater Draw, located in modern New Mexico. This is one of the oldest sites in North America, and features many arrowheads, old pots, and tools created by <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">indigenous [3] people. These people, called the “Clovis,” are known for being among the first in the world to use bones and ivory to create different tools. Many of the artworks left behind by this ancient civilization are carved with woolly mammoth bones, which had been ground into the shape of a small pen or knife.  Though these three sites are spread across the world, there are certain themes that unite them. In the prehistoric period, human beings across the planet would create works of art that primarily focused on other people and animals. They tried to create realistic depictions, instead of imagining new situations. Religion is also a very common theme, with many prehistoric and ancient religions being represented in these dramatic cave paintings. Prehistoric art may not be widely appreciated in museums or as a home decoration, but many of these ancient sites are very special and thrilling to visit. They preserve the secrets of ancient civilization, and perhaps, the key to appreciating life as well!
