The first documented cycling race was held on May 31, 1868, in Paris. Then in 1910, Alphonse Steines, who was writing for the newspaper at the time, suggested a new addition: the Tourmalet, a brutal climb ascending 1,400m to the peak. Each stage, or segment, is a complete race that happens during the course of a day, featuring a specific type of landscape. This year’s (2022) event has 2 individual timed trial stages, 6 flat stages, 7 hilly stages, and 6 mountain stages with 5 summit finishes. Including 2 rest days and 1 transfer day, the event is planned to run the course of 24 days. Each stage has a winner, and the cyclist with the lowest combined time becomes the winner of the entire game.  <span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:700;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">The Peloton<span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">In flat and hilly stages, cyclists ride in a formation called a <span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:italic;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">peloton<span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">, a French word that literally translates to a “group” or “pack.” The peloton allows riders to save energy by drafting, or staying close behind another rider. At high speed, pedaling against wind resistance is the major challenge, so riding behind others creates a shelter against the wind that makes pedaling as well as keeping up with the front riders easier. In these stages, you may see the Tour’s best riders in the back of the pack, drafting up others. This is to save energy for the most notorious part of the Tour: the mountains.   <span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">On an uphill ride, the peloton formation breaks down. At this stage, the race becomes less about fighting wind resistance than gravity, which affects all the riders equally regardless of their position. The best riders pedal to the front, relying on their own strength, while the weaker riders fall behind. As mentioned earlier, each stage has a winner. If you have never paid attention to Le Tour de France, this year’s event opens on the first of July. Who knows? It may get you interested in cycling—and it is a great way to maintain good cardio health.
