The world has gone through several influential transformations that have shaped societies and economies. The First Industrial Revolution happened during the second half of the 18th century, as the invention of steam-powered machines, such as the flying shuttle, trains, and the power loom, allowed manufacturers to enhance their productivity.  The Second Industrial Revolution, or the Technological Revolution, took place in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This was the era of rapid scientific discovery, where the world saw the introduction of electricity and telephones.   The Third Industrial Revolution, also known as the Digital Revolution, introduced, most notably, the internet and computers alongside other consumer electronics in the late 20th century.  The transformations that the previous generations lived through were nothing short of the word revolution: how we lived, worked, traveled and communicated completely transformed. However, while new technologies and resources allowed some to prosper immensely, others were not so lucky, as they were supplanted [1] in the assembly lines by machines.   Many argue that we are currently in the Fourth Industrial Revolution: Artificial intelligence, genetic engineering, automation, and the Internet of Things (IoT) have produced unprecedented  breakthroughs in biology, robotics, and beyond. A particularly notable invention in this Fourth Industrial Revolution was that of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Far from a fantasy of science fiction, this technology is already ubiquitous--dynamic algorithms, for instance, determine which advertisements would be most appealing to certain individuals and tailor their experiences based on browsing history. AI has also given rise to cars that can drive themselves and virtual celebrities in the entertainment industry. Many are eager for the changes that this industrial revolution will bring, citing that productivity is estimated to increase by 5-8% in the next 5-10 years because of automation.  Some are more apprehensive [2], however. For example, expensive new technologies might only benefit those with resources, not to mention the fact that AI and automation have already replaced many human jobs--not only those that require physical labor, but also intellectual labor.  Are you more thrilled or concerned about the Fourth Industrial Revolution?

세계는 사회와 경제의 모습을 결정하는 중대한 변화를 몇 차례 겪어왔습니다. 1차 산업혁명이 일어난 18세기 후반에는 플라잉 셔틀(방직업의 기계화를 가져오는 결정적인 동기가 됨), 기차, 역직기와 같은 증기의 힘을 이용하는 기계의 발명으로 제조업체의 생산성이 향상되었습니다. 2차 산업혁명 또는 기술 혁명은 19세기말과 20세기초에 걸쳐 일어났습니다. 전세계가 전기와 전화의 도입을 목격한 급속한 과학적 발견의 시대였습니다.  디지털 혁명이라고도 알려진 3차 산업혁명은 20세기말에 여러 다른 가전제품과 함께 가장 두드러지게는 인터넷과 컴퓨터를 가져다주었습니다. 이전 세대가 겪었던 변화는 혁명이라고 해도 과언이 아닐 만큼 우리가 어떻게 살고, 일하고, 여행하고, 소통하는가를 완전히 변화시켰습니다. 그러나 새로운 기술과 자원 덕분에 어떤 사람들은 엄청난 부를 누리게 된 반면 생산 조립 과정에서 일하던 사람들은 기계로 대체되는 불운을 겪어야 했습니다. 많은 사람들은 우리가 현재 4차 산업혁명을 경험하고 있다고 주장합니다. 인공지능, 유전공학, 자동화, 사물인터넷(IoT: 사물들을 인터넷으로 연결하는 기술)은 생물학, 로봇공학 그리고 그외 많은 분야에서 전례없는 획기적 발전을 가져오고 있습니다. 이 4차 산업혁명에서 특히 주목할 만한 발명은 인공지능입니다. 공상과학소설 속의 환상이 아니라 이 기술은 이미 어디서나 볼 수 있습니다. 예를 들어 동적 알고리즘은 어떤 광고가 특정 개인에게 가장 호소력이 있을지 결정하고 과거 검색기록을 바탕으로 거기에 맞춰 그들의 경험을 조정합니다. 인공지능은 또한 자율 주행 자동차를 만들었고 엔터테인먼트계에서는 가상의 연예인이 탄생했습니다. 많은 사람들이 자동화로 인해 향후 5~10년 동안 생산성이 5~8퍼센트 증가할 것으로 추정된다는 점을 들어 이번 산업혁명이 가져올 변화에 큰 기대를 걸고 있습니다. 그러나 우려를 표하는 사람들도 있습니다. 예를 들어, 인공지능과 자동화가 육체 노동뿐 아니라 지적 노동을 필요로 하는 많은 인간의 직업을 이미 대체하고 있다는 사실은 말할 것도 없고 값비싼 신기술은 부유한 사람들에게만 혜택을 줄 수 있기 때문입니다. 여러분은 4차 산업혁명에 대해 기대를 하고 계신가요 아니면 걱정을 하고 계신가요?
