IntroductionChances are if you’re reading this in 2021 (or later), you own a smartphone. Be it an Android or an iPhone, it’s yours, you consider it your own, and you use it in your day-to-day life. But what does it mean to truly own a device? For example, if your phone’s display fails, do you expect to be able to have the right to replace it with another display, either one manufactured by your phone’s manufacturer or even an alternative manufacturer? Do you expect to be able to easily replace your battery, a consumable part of the phone that requires replacement after about two years of use?  Apple: A ReviewIn October of 2020, Apple released the iPhone 12, the next iteration in a long series of iPhones that have evolved dramatically since the original iPhone in 2008. Alongside the many improvements, the iPhone 12 also has its display and camera serialized [1] to its motherboard. This means that if the camera of one iPhone 12 is swapped to another iPhone 12, it will fail to work properly. If a display is swapped [2], a message in iOS will warn that the phone’s display “may not be genuine,” regardless of whether or not the display is in fact genuine.  A repair of the iPhone 12’s display requires three different screwdrivers: a Phillips, a Tri-Point, and a Pentalobe, the last of which is Apple-specific. While Apple touts claims about removing iPhone accessories in the name of environmental-friendliness, Apple’s iterations of new iPhones become increasingly difficult to repair for the layperson. A screen for the iPhone 12 sells on eBay for just shy of $150 (as of October 2021, also note that replacement part costs tend to drop as phones age), while Apple’s official iPhone 12 screen replacement will set you back $279, more than a quarter the cost of the phone.  ConclusionsOf course, design practices that seem anti-repair or anti-consumer are not unique to Apple. One might argue that the very decision to seal batteries (a consumable product) into the body of a phone is anti-right to repair. Regardless, as these changes continue to evolve, it becomes increasingly important to consider what it means to truly own a device.
