Benefits of Sports for Teens

Introduction

According to a survey, more than 70 percent of students stop exercising regularly by 13. Students are no longer interested in sports, or quit them because of additional burdens, put on by parents or external academic pressures. Nevertheless, experts agree that sports in adolescence is of key importance.

Benefits of participating in sports

Goal-setting and time management skills

Though some view exercise as interfering with time that could be spent studying, studies show that teens who are active in sports and extracurricular activities are actually better at setting goals and managing their time.

Physical health

One in four children and adolescents between the ages of 2 and 19 are obese. Sixty minutes of regular exercise daily can prevent obesity.

Mind and spiritual health

The teenage years are when many young people begin to develop a strong set of personal ethics and morality. Through sports, teenagers can have experience through which they learn skills like responsibility, commitment, and leadership. This helps to build the mind and spirit.

Self-esteem and confidence boosts

Self-esteem is one’s judgment of themselves and how valuable they are. Many parents enroll their children in athletic clubs to develop their children’s personality and self-esteem. Confidence is built by way of positive interactions with friends, coaches, and team players.
