“It isn’t my forte!” — a cute way of saying that you are not an expert on a subject. Among young educated speakers and in the media, we increasingly hear the two-syllable pronunciation, fare-tey. This is technically incorrect. The word originated from French “fort,” meaning “strong.” Thus, the word should be pronounced as fawrt. Yet, many dictionaries list both pronunciations as correct. Is it “walk slow” or “walk slowly”? The former is colloquially used, while the latter is preferred in formal writing. Staunch grammarians might say that, unlike “fast,” “slow” can only be an adjective, not an adverb. But you’ll find dictionary entries of “slow” as an adverb. Grammar mistakes and a slip of the tongue [1] are often incorporated into the English lexicon. We learn correct language usage in school, but if many people make the same mistake for a long time, grammarians will update dictionaries. Embedded in this process is an inherent conflict between prescriptivism and descriptivism in language. Prescriptivism asks, “What should English be like,” whereas descriptivism asks, “What is English like.” Prescriptivism is an approach that embodies the idea that traditional grammar rules should be observed [2], while descriptivism tries to describe how people are using the language at the moment without judging whether that usage is good or bad. The US does not have a regulatory body that tells people how to use English as France’s Académie Française, while folks like Noah Webster have made their careers by writing dictionaries. Modern dictionaries and scholarly grammar are increasingly descriptive. Since we do need a level of consensus about the language we use to understand each other, this trend might not lead to any radical conclusions about abolishing grammar. But perhaps, splitting hairs about what is “correct” is a waste of energy unless you are a lawyer who fights with words. Employing the right mix of traditional rules and new adaptations seems to be the trick we should play.
