An economy class flight from Seoul to France generates 1.26 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (​​co2e). Kim, an average developer working in Seoul, generates 10 tons of ​​co2e each year. That said, with air travel, he can “efficiently” hit 12% of his yearly carbon footprint in the space of a few hours. Air travel is one of the least environmentally conscious methods of transportation. There are ways that might make flying less fuel-intensive.  Right now, planes flying across the Atlantic have to follow a fixed route because radars cannot track flights in real-time yet. But researchers are developing “low-orbit” satellites that will be able to indicate the position of a plane mid-flight. This will enable flights across the Atlantic to start taking advantage of the ability to plan flexible routes, making flights greener without developing extensive new technology.  Jetstreams affect many flight routes. These air currents that blow from west to east can significantly cut flight times of eastbound flights. It follows logically that you can go somewhere faster riding on the wind that blows in the same direction. On the contrary, westbound flights usually encounter headwinds [1] in the opposite direction that lengthen trips. But since these bands of wind meander from north to south depending on the time of the day, flexible routes can help flights avoid or make use of these air currents. And faster flights burn less fuel.  Of course, technologies are also emerging to make air travel more sustainable. For example, a team of international researchers has developed a method to transform the carbon emissions that planes now spew into an alternative fuel source. The only reason implementing this method is now feasible (as others have tried before them) is that they’ve found a much cheaper catalyst [2] to turn the carbon into fuel. That’s a running theme with a lot of these emerging technologies — they’re very expensive, resource-intensive, and require extensive testing.  Environmental specialists recommend, though it’s nearly impossible to avoid air travel in the modern age, that we choose it as a last resort [3] if more sustainable options, like trains or other forms of public transportation, are available. Of course, you could always take a zero-emissions boat if you plan to travel overseas, like climate activist Greta Thunberg!  We’re facing a cultural change where traveling and other leisure activities should be an environmentally conscious choice. The COVID-19 pandemic has made everyone more conscious of our effect on others, as well as on the places we inhabit. Now it’s up to us to start making a sustainable change so we can continue to live our best lives on this planet.

서울에서 프랑스로 가는 이코노미클래스 항공편은 1.26 톤의 온실가스를 발생시킵니다. 서울에서 일하는 평범한 개발자 김씨는 매년 10톤의 온실가스를 만들어냅니다. 즉, 비행기를 타면 1인이 연간 발생시키는 탄소발자국의 12%나 되는 양를 단 몇시간안에 “효율적으로” 만들어내버리는 셈이죠. 비행기 여행은 환경에 가장 해를 미치는 교통 수단 중 하나입니다. 전세계에서 충분한 수의 사람들이 백신을 접종해서 여행이 다시 늘어나기 시작하면, 이산화탄소 배출량은 2050년까지 지금의 3배로 증가할지도 모릅니다. 하지만 우리가 모든 비행의 탄소 배출량을 줄일 수 있다면 어떻게 될까요? 비행기 연료 사용량을 줄일 수 있는 새로운 방법들은 존재합니다.  아직은 비행기 레이다가 실시간으로 비행을 추적하지 못하기 때문에, 현재 대서양을 횡단하는 비행기들은 정해진 항로를 따라서만 운항해야 합니다. 하지만 현재 연구 개발중인 “저 궤도” 위성들은 비행중인 비행기의 위치를 추적할 수 있습니다.  이 기술은 대서양 횡단 비행기가 보다 자유로이 항로를 택할 수 있게 해줌으로써 전적으로 새로운 기술을 개발할 필요 없이 현재보다 친환경적인 비행을 가능하게 해줄 수 있을겁니다.  제트기류는 많은 비행 경로에 영향을 미칩니다. 동쪽으로 가는 비행기가 서쪽에서 동쪽으로 움직이는 공기의 흐름인 제트기류를 만나면 비행시간을 대폭 줄일 수 있습니다. 어려운 원리가 아니라 같은 방향으로 부는 바람을 타면 더 빨리 움직일 수 있는 것이죠. 그러나 비행기가 서쪽으로 갈 경우는 대개 이 기류가 비행의 역방향으로 작용하기 때문에 비행시간이 길어집니다. 그러나 제트기류가 하루 중 시간에 따라 북쪽에서 남쪽으로 움직이기 때문에 유연한 항로는 항공편이 이 기류를 피하거나 이용하는 데 도움을 줄 수 있습니다. 그리고 빠른 비행은 연료를 적게 사용하죠. 물론 항공 여행을 보다 지속가능성 있게 만드는 기술도 등장하고 있습니다.  예를들어, 여러 나라의 학자들로 구성된 팀이 현재 비행기가 공중에 내뿜는 탄소를 다른 연료원으로 변환해서 사용할 수 있는 방법을 개발하고 있습니다. (이전에도 이런 시도가 있었지만) 이것이 이제 와서야 가능한 유일한 이유는 탄소를 연료로 바꿀 수 있는 값싼 촉매를 발견했기 때문입니다. 그것이 바로 새로 등장하는 여러 기술들의 공통적인 과제입니다. 아직까지 이런 기술들은 비싸고 자원 의존도가 높고 복잡하고 광범위한 시험과정이 요구됩니다.    환경과학자들에 따르면 현대인이 비행을 전적으로 피하는 것은 불가능하지만 기차나 다른 보다 환경친화적인 교통수단이 있다면 비행기 이용은 제일 마지막으로 택하기를 권합니다. 물론 해외로 여행갈 때 환경운동가 그레타 툰베르그처럼 탄소 배출이 전혀 없는 배를 타고 갈 수도 있습니다!  현재 우리는 그 어느 때보다도 여행이나 다른 여가 활동을 할 때 환경적으로 그리고 그 이상의 다른 차원의 문제에 깨어 있어야 하는 문화적인 변화에 직면하고 있을지도 모릅니다. 코로나19 팬데믹 사태는 모든 사람들이 우리가 살고 있는 곳 뿐 아니라 같이 살고 있는 다른 사람들에게 미치는 영향을 보다 심각하게 깨닫고 의식하도록 만들었습니다. 이 지구에서 계속해서 최상의 삶을 누리려면 우리는 지속가능성 있는 변화들을 시도해야 하고 그것은 바로 우리에게 달려 있습니다.
