Some people seem to have more trouble with empathy. Why do you think this is? Do you find it hard to empathize with another person?

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;What&rsquo;s the difference between sympathy and empathy? Though the two words have the same suffix, &ldquo;pathy&rdquo; (meaning &ldquo;feeling of pain&rdquo;), they aren&rsquo;t quite synonyms. They cannot be used interchangeably. Let&rsquo;s take a look at some Cambridge Dictionary definitions:

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Empathy, then, is the ability to put yourself in someone else&rsquo;s shoes-- to experience their feelings like they are your own. As an example, let&rsquo;s say your friend shares sad news about their father; perhaps they are grieving. They might say: &ldquo;I found out that my dad is sick.&rdquo;&nbsp;
&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;As a friend, it&rsquo;s very likely you can sympathize. You will care for them, and you might say: "Oh, I'm so sorry. I hope he gets better.&rdquo;
&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Empathy, however, is the ability to both imagine and feel your friend&rsquo;s feelings as if they are your own. If you find that you&rsquo;re able to imagine your own father being sick-- that would be empathy.&nbsp;

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;In the pre-class video, Pink Elephant Bingbong is upset after his belongings carrying happy memories are lost. The other main characters, Joy and Sadness, try to comfort him, each in their own way.
&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Joy says, "Everything will be fine! There&rsquo;s a fun game over there! That&rsquo;d be fun!&rdquo; But Bingbong doesn't feel better. Sadness says, "Your memories must have been amazing. I bet you had a wonderful memory.&rdquo; Following this, Bingbong seemingly begins to recover.
&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Empathy is most helpful in communicating with others-- it helps you to fully understand how others are feeling. It&rsquo;s also critical for forming strong relationships.&nbsp;
&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Think about how you talk to your friends when they&rsquo;re struggling. Do you consider yourself an empathetic person?
